The Comb Series. 2011
The two-dimensional plane.
Flat representation of space.
A graphic symbol may become an object.
Scale shifts. Orientation shifts.
Three things in the far back of my head:
- Ancient African combs and tools.
- Cross-sections of Cargo ships.
- Overhead views of early Video game maps.

The Stripe Paintings Strata. 2010
I have a reoccurring dream where I am passing through the ground. Not necessarily tunneling, but sort of out of phase with the matter of this world. Passing through it like a ghost. Sometimes I descend many miles through dirt, clay, trash, bones, mud, oil, water, magma, etc.
In H. P. Lovecrafts story The Dreams in the Witch-House the main character, Gillman, is a student of mathematics and folklore in New England. He intentionally rents an infamous attic room supposedly inhabited by a witch a century prior. The angles of the rooms walls enable him to travel inter-dimensionally. He mistakes these sojourns as dreams.
Gillmans dreams consisted largely in plunges through limitless abysses of inexplicably colored twilight and bafflingly disordered sound; abysses whose material and gravitational properties, and whose relation to his own entity he could not begin to explain. He did not walk or climb, fly or swim, crawl or wriggle; yet always experienced a mode of motion partly voluntary and partly involuntary.
The abysses were by no means vacant, being crowded by indescribably angled masses of alien-hued substances, some of which appeared to be organic while others inorganic. A few of the organic objects tended to awake vague memories in the back of his mind, though he could form no conscious idea of what they mockingly resembled or suggested.
Gillman hints at a familiarity with the organic objects in the crowded abysses. Trace back the space-time worms of every atom in your body. The paths will lead through plants, animals, dirt and gas. Every atom on Earth at this moment originated from the stars. These are the memories in the back of his mind.
The Stripe paintings represent the frozen non-latent picture of the solid block universe where everything is everywhere.

The Console Series. 2009
Console, as in a Star Trek computer console.
What is out there? What is behind the objects and relics we see in museums and Sci-fi flicks? We search for the unknown, seeking answers. Although, we stop short, content to bask in the power of mystery. There is a comfort in the aesthetic quality of objects with unknown makers, purpose and time.
I want the Console painitngs to be viewed like, "Oh, these must have had a function in the future." You're right, the only way this sentence could possibly be grammatically correct is if the speaker lives in a future future!
When a functional object transcends non-function what does it become? If we follow the same analogy of natural, unnatural, supernatural ... then it becomes "Super-functional." A Supernatural event is beyond belief. It hardly registers in our brain. It is so foreign that we may not notice it at all. Now back to "function." A warrior's shield is "functional." A commemorative shield hanging in the King's hall is "non-functional." Now imagine a time 10,000 years in the future. War has been unknown for millennia and a new civilization has risen. A farmer finds the "non-functional" shield. It has lost its original function (defense) AND its meaning as a non-functional object-symbol. In the future farmer's eyes it is "super-functional." Just like a painting.
